Actually, there are 18 pieces counting the stable. I at first thought an item was missing (a Shepherd), but after diligently searching, I found it.  This is a wonderful set for a child to learn about the night Jesus was born.  Like one of the other reviews, the little book describes just enough about this birth for a 3 year old to be effective.  Our 3 yr old great-granddaughter loves the set and will play with it for many years to come. The pieces are very sturdy.  Price is awesome.

I ordered 2 of these sets as gifts. Both sets came with 2 Mary's and NO Joseph. One set was also missing 1 of the wise men. I have been unable to reach anyone at this company to resolve the issue and I am very frustrated as these were to be gifts. If the issue was resolved they would be cute but they are unusable the way they are.  Now I'm wishing I spent my money elsewhere.

I got this for our grandchildren (ages 2 - 9 yrs. old).... I wanted to be able to put it low enough for them to see and be able to handle and play with. The figures are very stable (even the camel) and don't fall over easily.. The little book that came with it is very tiny ..maybe 4" x 3" but is just about the perfect amount of info. for the little ones. I ordered an additional book for the older kiddoes... I painted a very simple painting to place behind the set to create a night scene with Bethlehem in the distance and the star over the manger.... my GKids love it and move them all around while I read the story of the birth of Jesus.  Our 5 yr. old GDaughter was a little upset that neither Mary nor Joseph had moveable arms for holding baby Jesus....soooo cute!
